A Short History about our Town!

Established in 1740, the Town of Whitakers is located in both Nash and Edgecombe Counties, near the northern most portion of both. Whitakers is situated on both sides of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad and on US Highway 301 and is a quick five-minute drive from interstate 95 and just 30 minutes from the Rocky Mount-Wilson Airport. Whitakers boasts a family physician, a medical clinic and a pharmacy and has easy access to several hospitals, dental clinics and medical complexes. Consolidated Diesel is the largest industry in the area. The town also boasts many historic landmarks, including Whitakers Baptist Church, Bellamy's Mill, Fishing Creek, and Watson Seed Farms. Whitakers' local government is comprised of the mayor and a five-member city council. The town is actively participating in the Rural Center's North Carolina Small Towns Economic Prosperity (NC STEP) Program in order to revamp its downtown area.

The Town of Whitakers is a close knit, family oriented community with traditional values. We were once a thriving small town with several restaurants, a drug store complete with a soda fountain, a movie house, and many lucrative businesses in the busy downtown area.
